The Telecom Infra Project’s OpenRAN Project Group (PG) is undergoing a strategic evolution to stay aligned with the growing needs of the telecom industry. Our mission remains focused on accelerating the deployment, innovation, and commercialization of multi-vendor OpenRAN solutions that are interoperable, carrier-grade, and ready for integration into operators’ networks.

Currently, the PG consists of six subgroups addressing different aspects of Open RAN deployments, from Radio Units (RU) to orchestration and automation. However, we are excited to announce a proposed recharter that consolidates these efforts into two newly formed subgroups: the Solutions Subgroup and the RAN Intelligence, Automation & Orchestration (RIAO) Subgroup. This recharter reflects the growing need to streamline processes and drive faster adoption of OpenRAN solutions in the market.

The Solutions Subgroup merges the work of four existing subgroups—RU, CU/DU, Indoor & Small Cell, and Macro. Its objective is to tackle the technical challenges of indoor and outdoor OpenRAN deployments, defining requirements and developing blueprints with a strong commercial focus. The subgroup will cover a wide range of use cases, including small cells, private networks, Fixed Wireless Access, and critical communications, while ensuring a unified approach to hardware and software requirements for OpenRAN components like CU, DU, RU, and O-Cloud./

The RIAO Subgroup combines the expertise of the former RIA (RAN Intelligence & Automation) and ROMA (OpenRAN Orchestration, Management & Automation) subgroups. RIAO will focus on enabling AI/ML-driven RAN automation, developing use cases for lifecycle management automation, and advancing orchestration frameworks. This subgroup is vital in driving collaboration between operators and vendors to create CI/CD solutions that support large-scale OpenRAN deployments.

To support the success of these subgroups, we are actively seeking co-leads who will help guide the strategic and technical direction of these efforts. This opportunity is open to all companies in the OpenRAN ecosystem, including vendors, operators, neutral hosts, and testing partners. Co-leads will gain industry recognition, increased visibility, and the chance to influence the direction of OpenRAN deployments. If you are interested in stepping into this leadership role, please apply via the co-lead nomination form.

As we prepare for Fyuz™ 2024, these updates showcase our commitment to leading the industry by driving collaboration and innovation. Fyuz™ is the perfect platform to highlight our progress, bring the community together, and push the OpenRAN agenda forward. Learn more about the Fyuz™ 2024 agenda at www.fyuz.events

We remain at the forefront of accelerating OpenRAN adoption, and with these changes, we continue to unite the ecosystem to deliver scalable, interoperable, and verified OpenRAN solutions. Stay tuned as we move forward in shaping the future of telecom through collaboration and leadership!
