TIP Community Labs are designed to support TIP’s mission in developing, testing, and deploying open, disaggregated, standards-based solutions that deliver the high-quality connectivity the world needs. A Community Lab is dedicated to TIP Project Groups, but the space and basic equipment are sponsored by companies participating in TIP. Our Community Labs are a vehicle for testing telecommunications network solutions that helps the industry to accelerate the adoption and deployment of open, disaggregated network technologies.
“We are very happy to have all the experience and structure of PUCP in Peru for this new lab in Latin America and the first one to cover the Andean Region. We already have several examples not only in LATAM, but around the world of the fundamental role community lab plays for the Telecom Infra Project ecosystem and for the improvement of disruptive technologies for open networks,” says Giovani Prado Siqueira, Head of TIP Technologies on Facebook.
This TIP Community Lab in Peru joins the other three labs that TIP has in the region. TIM Brasil hosts a TIP Community Lab focused on validating products, providing a collaborative environment so that project groups can test and validate new technologies and proofs of concept. The CPQD-hosted Community Lab focuses on validating solutions, testing products and solutions in an end-to-end environment, demonstrating their maturity for deployment in a commercial environment. The TIP Community Lab at Inatel is responsible for validating solutions and field testing and will work to optimize the operation and maintenance of open, disaggregated networks through software-driven processes, hosting boot camps or hackathons to accelerate the adoption and growth of disaggregated technologies, and deploying automation tools.
“We are very excited about the possibilities that having a local TIP Community Lab, dedicated to serving our region, brings in terms of fostering the cooperation among different actors within the telecommunications ecosystem and accelerating the adoption of these new technologies for the benefit of our citizens. We look forward to leveraging our past experience in the design of novel network architectures, open networking technologies, cross layer optimization, and SDN, to help shaping the adoption of TIP´s solutions in the region,” says Professor Cesar Santivanez, Head of the PUCP´s Advanced Networks Research Laboratory, and Director of the new PUCP TIP Community Lab.
Likewise, Doctor Carlos Silva, Director of the Research Promotion Office at PUCP, states that in the field of telecommunications where technology development is accelerated and technologies become obsolete very soon; the creation of the first TIP Community Lab in the Andes is an excellent opportunity to research cutting-edge technologies. “In regions of the world like ours, the products offered by companies in this sector are mainly of the service type; therefore, having the option of receiving support in infrastructure and space as well as proposals directly from companies, will allow to interact with research groups in the Andes region fulfilling orders for tests, product validation, modular and end-to-end system implementations applied to open and disaggregated network technologies,” he says.
Similar experiences in other sectors show that these alliances allow to strengthen the capacities of the members who are enriched by the exchange of experiences and knowledge in a clear ‘win-win’ strategy that is transferred to society through the generated products.
Certainly, this experience will empower researchers and innovators by offering tangible solutions to society, not only in the country but in the region and the world.
